Long-Haired Dachshund Puppies — What Makes Them Special (and Where to Find a Good One)
Walk into a room with a long-haired Dachshund and you'll understand the appeal immediately. That silky, flowing coat. Those expressive eyes. The way they curl into your lap like they were designed for exactly that. Long-haired Dachshunds are something genuinely special — and families who fall for one tend to fall hard.
But before you search "long-haired Dachshund puppies for sale," it helps to know what you're looking for and what to look out for.
What sets the long-haired variety apart
Long-haired Dachshunds share the same spirited, curious personality the breed is known for, but many owners find them slightly calmer and gentler than their smooth-coated counterparts. They're loyal to their families, good with children, and surprisingly adaptable — equally at home in an apartment or a house with a yard.
Their coat does require a little more grooming than a smooth-coated Dachshund. A gentle brush a few times a week keeps it tangle-free and looking its best. Beyond that, they're the same breed: playful, smart, occasionally stubborn, and completely devoted to the people they love.
Cream and cream dapple — the colors worth knowing
Two of the most sought-after coat colors in the long-haired variety are ee cream and cream dapple. Ee cream Dachshunds are a clear, warm golden-white. Cream dapples carry a subtle dapple pattern layered over that base, giving each puppy a one-of-a-kind look. Both are rare, and both tend to draw a waitlist.
What to look for in a long-haired Dachshund breeder
Not all breeders are equal. When you're evaluating a breeder, ask:
Are the puppies raised inside the home with human contact from birth?
Does the breeder health-test their dogs and provide documentation?
Is there a written health guarantee — and can you read it before you commit?
Will the breeder stay in touch after you bring your puppy home?
A breeder who can answer yes to all four is worth talking to.
