What to Know Before Getting a Dachshund Puppy — An Honest Guide for Families

Dachshunds are one of the most beloved dog breeds in the country — and one of the most misunderstood. Families fall in love with their look and personality, bring one home, and then discover they've adopted a dog with a very strong opinion about everything.

That's not a bad thing. But it's worth knowing before you commit.

Here's what we tell every family who reaches out to us at Snow's Doxies, because an informed family makes a happier match — for the puppy and for everyone who loves them.

They bond deeply — and they mean it

Dachshunds were bred to track and hunt, which means they're independent thinkers with a surprisingly strong will. But that same intensity translates into a fiercely loyal bond with their family. Your Dachshund will follow you from room to room. They'll notice when you're upset. They'll announce every visitor at the door.

They're not a dog you get and set aside. They want to be with you, and a Dachshund who's lonely will let you know.

The back — the one thing every owner should understand

Dachshunds have long spines and short legs. That combination makes them prone to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), a back condition that can range from mild to serious. The good news: most cases are preventable with a few simple habits.

  • Keep your Dachshund at a healthy weight — extra pounds put extra pressure on the spine

  • Use ramps or steps to help them get on and off furniture rather than jumping

  • Avoid activities that put repeated strain on the back (think: no launching off the couch ten times a day)

A good breeder will tell you this upfront. We do, every time.

Questions to ask before you pick a puppy

When you're evaluating a breeder, these are the questions that matter:

  • Can I see the health contract before I reserve a puppy?

  • Are the puppies raised inside the home?

  • What health testing is done on the breeding dogs?

  • What is the health guarantee — and what does it actually cover?

  • Will you be available after I bring my puppy home?

At Snow's Doxies, our full 12-page health contract is on our website before you ever reach out. Our puppies are raised inside our home, handled daily, and placed only after we've had a real conversation with each family. We stay in touch, because where our puppies end up matters to us.

If you're ready to find your family's Dachshund, we'd love to hear from you.
